Description

A Handwoven Raffia Clutch Bag, Built to Last More Than One Summer

Most woven clutches are a seasonal compromise. They photograph well and then collapse in the hand, the weave loosens after three outings, and by the following June they look tired.

This one is made properly, and the fibre is a large part of why.

Raffia is not generic straw. It is stripped from the undersides of raffia palm leaves, long, pliable, and considerably stronger than the dried grass used in most woven bags. It bends without cracking, which is what lets a raffia bag keep its shape season after season while a straw one goes soft at the corners.

Woven over a structured body with bound rather than trimmed edges, this clutch stands up whether it is full or empty. At 190g you carry it all evening without noticing.

One of our buyers said it plainly: she had been looking for a woven clutch that did not look cheap or fall apart after two uses.

Raffia vs Straw – Why It Matters

“Straw bag” covers everything from a beach tote to a sun hat. Raffia is specific, and the difference shows up in the hand.

Raffia vs Straw – Why It Matters

If you have owned a woven bag that gave out at the corners, it was almost certainly not raffia.

The Scalloped Flap

The flap is what makes this bag look like something rather than anything.

Instead of the straight fold-over edge on almost every woven clutch, this one is cut in a soft scalloped wave — a shallow curve that dips at the centre and rises at both ends. It is hand-cut and hand-stitched, which is why the line differs slightly on every bag.

It is a small decision that changes the whole silhouette. A straight-edged woven clutch reads as beachwear. This one reads as an evening bag that happens to be made of raffia.

Undyed Palm Fibre, Left Alone

The raffia is undyed. What you see is the fibre’s own color, pale sand through to warm honey, shifting across the weave depending on which part of the leaf it came from.

There is no dye, no lacquer, and no plastic coating. That is why the texture stays open, why it smells faintly green when it arrives, and why the tone deepens very slightly over the first season the way natural fibre does.

Carry It Two Ways

The strap is woven from the same raffia as the body in a narrower weave, and sits at shoulder length.

On the shoulder: it drops to around hip height on most people and sits flat against the body rather than sliding off.

As a clutch: tuck the strap inside or hold it flat against the back, and you have a clean-lined evening clutch with nothing hanging.

That dual function is the practical argument for buying this over a satin clutch you will use twice a year.

Size and What Fits

A standard phone lies flat inside, with room for cards, keys, and a lipstick beside it. It will not take a large phone in a thick case alongside a full make-up bag; it is an evening clutch, sized for an evening.

Where It Works

Weddings. The most common reason our buyers order it. Natural raffia works against almost any dress colour, and the scalloped flap keeps it from reading as casual in photographs.

Bridal showers, christenings, garden parties. Warm enough for daytime, finished enough for the occasion.

Summer evenings out. Rooftop dinners, restaurants, anywhere you want texture rather than shine.

Resort and destination events. It weighs nothing and packs flat between clothes.

Everyday, on the shoulder. Lunch, shopping, a gallery afternoon. This is where the strap earns its keep.

Styling It

Undyed raffia behaves like a neutral, which means it works harder than any colour-matched clutch. Against black, it lifts the outfit. Against white or cream, it settles into a tonal look, exactly how it is styled in our photographs, with white linen and gold. Against bold print, it calms everything down.

Pair it with handmade jewellery or cowrie shell accessories to lean into the handmade look, or keep everything else plain and let the weave be the only texture in the outfit.

Handwoven, So Each One Differs

Every clutch is woven by hand by Miss Swan artisans. Fibre tone varies between pieces, weave tension differs by a fraction, and the scalloped curve follows the maker’s hand rather than a template. Fine loose fibres at the strap joins are normal in handwoven raffia and can be trimmed flush with scissors.

Yours will be recognisably this bag — not an identical copy of the photograph.

Caring for Raffia

  • Store it stuffed with tissue or a soft cloth so it holds its shape
  • Keep it dry. Raffia is more water-tolerant than straw, but it will still warp if it gets properly wet
  • Dust with a dry, soft brush, following the direction of the weave
  • Trim stray fibres flush with small scissors; never pull them
  • Keep it out of prolonged direct sun, which lightens natural raffia over time
  • Store it flat, not crushed beneath heavier bags

Treated this way, it outlasts several seasons of the satin clutches it replaces.

What Buyers Say

Every verified buyer has rated this clutch five stars. The two things they mention most are how well it is constructed, and how fast it arrives — most report it landing within two to three days.

One buyer’s friend who works in fashion picked it up and examined the weave, then said the construction beat pieces she had seen at three times the price.

FAQs about Our Raffia Clutch Bag

What is raffia?

Raffia is a natural fibre stripped from the underside of raffia palm leaves. The palm grows across West and Central Africa and in Madagascar. The fibre is long, strong and pliable, which is why it is used for weaving bags, hats and textiles rather than simply as filler.

Is raffia the same as straw?

No. "Straw" is a catch-all for dried grass and stalk fibres. Raffia is a specific palm leaf fibre, longer, stronger and more flexible. Raffia bends where straw cracks, which is why raffia bags hold their shape for years while straw ones soften within a season or two.

What size is this clutch bag?

23.5 cm wide, 15.5 cm high and 5.5 cm deep (9.25 × 6.1 × 2.2 inches), weighing 190g.

What fits inside it?

A standard phone lying flat, plus cards, keys and a lipstick. It is sized as an evening clutch, so it will not take a large phone in a thick case alongside a full make-up bag.

Does it come with a strap?

Yes. The strap is woven from the same raffia as the body and sits at shoulder length, dropping to around hip height. You can also tuck it away and carry the bag as a clutch.

Can I wear it cross-body?

No! the strap is shoulder length rather than cross-body length. It sits flat on the shoulder rather than across the chest.

What is the closure?

Magnetic snap

Is the raffia dyed?

No. The colour is the natural fibre, undyed and uncoated, which is why the tone shifts slightly across the weave and between bags.

Will my clutch look exactly like the photos?

It will be the same design, but each is woven individually. Fibre tone, weave tension and the exact line of the scalloped flap vary slightly. That variation is inherent to handwoven work.

There are small loose fibres on my bag, is that a fault?

No. Fine stray fibres at the strap joins and edges are normal in handwoven raffia. Trim them flush with small scissors. Never pull them, as that can loosen the weave.

How do I clean a raffia bag?

Dust it with a dry, soft brush, following the weave. Never use water or cleaning products because raffia absorbs moisture and warps.

Does raffia clutch bag last?

Yes, and better than straw. The fibre is strong and flexible enough to bend without cracking, so a well-made raffia bag holds its shape for years rather than a season.

Can I use it in daytime as well as evening?

Yes, and the strap is the reason. On the shoulder it works for lunch or shopping; carried as a clutch it works for a wedding or a dinner. Few evening bags do both.

How long does delivery take?

2 to 7 days worldwide from our UK, Germany, Belgium or USA warehouse. Most buyers report receiving it within two to three days.

Do you offer bulk pricing?

Yes! 30% off at 12 units or more. For larger orders, use the bulk request form on this page.
