Authentic African Dashiki: Made in Africa

Most dashikis sold online are not African. Search the fine print on the big import sites, and you will find “made in Thailand,” “tailored in India,” “printed in China.” The garment is a copy of a West African original, produced four thousand miles from where the style comes from.

Ours is not. This African dashiki is cut and sewn on the continent, from cotton wax print, by tailors who have been making this garment their whole working lives. That is the entire difference, and it shows up in the things that are hard to fake: the weight of the cloth, the accuracy of the print registration, the density of the embroidery around the neckline, and a collar that holds its shape after washing instead of curling at the edge.

If you have owned a cheap dashiki before and found it thin, scratchy, or badly printed, this is what you were missing.

What a Traditional Dashiki Is

The dashiki is a loose-fitting pullover shirt from West Africa, worn across Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Mali, and Cameroon and carried into the diaspora from the 1960s onward. The name comes from the Yoruba danshiki, itself borrowed from the Hausa dan ciki, the garment worn underneath.

Three things define a traditional dashiki, and all three are here:

  • The V-neck, framed by an embroidered panel that runs down the chest
  • The wide, straight cut, made to hang loose and move air across the body in heat
  • The bold symmetrical print, most recognisably the Angelina pattern with its repeated medallion motif

It is pulled over the head – no buttons, no zip. It is designed for comfort first, which is precisely why it survived the journey from village tailors to global fashion without changing shape.

Unisex by Design

This dashiki is genuinely unisex, and that is not a modern retrofit; the traditional cut has always been worn by both men and women.

For men, it fits as a relaxed shirt over trousers or jeans, hanging to the hip or mid-thigh depending on your size.

For women, the same garment works as a loose shirt, belted at the waist as a tunic, or sized up into a short dress. If you want a closer fit, size down one from your usual; if you want the traditional drape, take your normal size.

We publish full measurements for every size below so you can check it against a shirt you already own rather than guessing.

How to choose: lay a shirt you already like flat, measure it armpit to armpit, double that number, and match it to the chest column. The dashiki is meant to hang loose. If you are between sizes and want the traditional look, take the larger one.

Adjust this table to your actual garment measurements before publishing. Wrong numbers here cost more in returns than they earn in traffic.

Fabric and Construction

  • 100% cotton wax print — breathable, gets softer with every wash
  • Hand-finished embroidery at the neckline and chest panel
  • Two front pockets, deep enough to be useful
  • Reinforced side seams and a finished hem
  • Pull-over V-neck with no fastenings

Because these are printed and cut in batches, the exact placement of the pattern varies slightly from shirt to shirt. That variation is the mark of a real wax print garment rather than a mass-printed reproduction.

When to Wear It

Customers buy this dashiki for:

  • Weddings and traditional ceremonies, as a guest or as part of the wedding party
  • Black History Month, Juneteenth, and Kwanzaa events
  • Church, community, and cultural gatherings
  • Graduations, worn over or under a gown
  • Group orders – choirs, dance troupes, school assemblies, family reunions
  • Everyday wear in warm weather, where the loose cotton cut simply works

Care Instructions

  • Machine wash cold, inside out, on a gentle cycle
  • Wash separately for the first two washes, as the wax print can release a little dye
  • No bleach
  • Line dry in shade; direct sun fades wax print over time
  • Warm iron on the reverse if needed

Treated this way, a wax print dashiki lasts for years and softens rather than degrades.

FAQ

What is a dashiki?

A dashiki is a loose-fitting pullover shirt from West Africa, recognisable by its V-neck with an embroidered chest panel and its bold symmetrical print. It is worn across Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Mali, and Cameroon, and widely across the African diaspora.

Is this dashiki actually made in Africa?

Yes. It is cut and sewn on the continent by African tailors. Many dashikis sold online are manufactured in Asia — check the fine print on any listing you are comparing.

Is the dashiki unisex?

Yes. The traditional cut has always been worn by both men and women. Men typically wear it as a relaxed shirt; women wear it loose, belted as a tunic, or sized up as a short dress.

How should a dashiki fit?

Loose. It is designed to hang away from the body and let air move. If you want the traditional drape, take your usual size. If you prefer something closer to the body, size down one.

What size dashiki should I order?

Measure a shirt you already like flat from armpit to armpit, double it, and match that number to the chest column in our size guide. That is more reliable than converting from a standard size label.

Does the dashiki shrink?

Minimal shrinkage if you wash cold and line dry. Hot water and tumble drying will shrink cotton wax print noticeably, so avoid both.

Will the colours run?

Wax print can release a small amount of dye in the first couple of washes. Wash it separately the first two times and it will settle.

What is a traditional dashiki made from?

Cotton wax print. Ours is 100% cotton — breathable, and it softens with wear rather than pilling.

Can I wear a dashiki to a wedding?

Yes, and many customers do. It is standard dress for African and diaspora weddings, ceremonies, and traditional celebrations, both for guests and for the wedding party.

Do you sell dashikis wholesale?

Yes. Discounts start at 10 units and reach 54% at 100+. For larger consignments, use the bulk request form on this page, and we will quote you directly.

How long does delivery take?

2 to 3 days worldwide, shipped from our UK, Belgium, Germany, or USA warehouse depending on your location.

Can I return it if the size is wrong?

Yes, within our standard returns window. Check the measurements table first – it is the fastest way to get the size right the first time.

We trust that you adore your Baobabmart products just as much as we do however, if you wish to return any items, fret not! You can initiate returns within 1 to 2 days after the date of delivery so that you have ample time to send them back to us.
